2.7.1 Program Length
The institution offers one or more degree programs based on at least 60 semester credit hours or the equivalent at the associate level; at least 120 semester credit hours or the equivalent at the baccalaureate level; or at least 30 semester credit hours or the equivalent at the post-baccalaureate, graduate, or professional level. If an institution uses a unit other than semester credit hours, it provides an explanation for the equivalency. The institution also provides a justification for all degrees that include fewer than the required number of semester credit hours or its equivalent unit.

Distance Education
Distance Learning at SWTJC was developed to deliver courses taught by qualified faculty to our large and sparsely populated 11-county service area. Distance education at SWTJC is defined as: 1) Interactive video conferencing courses provided in real time; 2) Online (internet) courses; and 3) Hybrid courses (face-to-face courses with online labs). All such distance education courses are identified with the same course rubric and number as corresponding face-to-face courses; they are differentiated only by “section” number as a distance learning course.
The 60 semester hour degree completion requirement applies irrespective of how students complete course requirements. Courses offered through Distance Education modalities utilize the same syllabi as those courses offered “face-to-face,” and have the same course requirements, learning outcomes, and number of semester credit hours awarded for successful completion. Southwest Texas Junior College does not maintain a “distance education program” that is administratively or academically independent of its “regular,” face-to-face offerings.
Program Review
The 60 semester hour degree requirement for the degree listed above was reviewed and established by the SWTJC Curriculum Committee. This committee operates under the requirements of SWTJC Policy EFA (Local) and thereby serves as the College’s principal body to oversee the instructional program. The SWTJC Faculty Handbook provides the Curriculum Committee’s membership roster, and the sequence required to process a suggested course or program change or a proposed new course or program.
